"OCEAN'S FOUR?" The 1960 Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack heist comedy "Ocean's Eleven," about former military guys who reunite to rob a bunch of Vegas casinos, isn't exactly a National Film Registry-bound oeuvre destined for the Pantheon of Cinema Classics. No matter.
Although it's the new millennium, Hollywood still knows no shame in venturing where no others dare in scavenging for material. Thus, we have on the boards plans for a remake of "Ocean's Eleven," courtesy of Warner Bros. and producer Jerry Weintraub, with George Clooney -- as Danny Ocean -- so far the only star firmed for the megastar cast of 11 partying felons.
Problem is, this "Ocean's" could be heading for a Titanic-like iceberg of a budget. For starters, Clooney pockets about $10 million per pic. Already mentioned to co-star with him are Brad Pitt (about $17.5 mil per pic), Johnny Depp ($11 million), Julia Roberts

Hollywood.saw sharp declines across the board at the box office over the post-Thanksgiving weekend as moviegoing gave way to holiday shopping.
Buena Vista/Disney and Pixar's G-rated computer-animated blockbuster "Toy Story 2" held on to first place in its third weekend with a 50% drop that reflected how most films in the marketplace performed.
"Toy 2" snapped up a still hefty estimated $28.30 million (-50%) at 3,238 theaters (+2 theaters, $8,734 per theater). Its total is approximately $117.3 million, heading for a domestic theatrical total of $250 million-plus.
"Toy 2's" per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release last weekend. Directed by John Lasseter, it features the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Annie Potts, Wayne Knight, Laurie Metcalf, Este

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., May 11, 2000 – There's really nothing new about another mob movie from Martin Scorsese, is there? How about this: It co-stars Daniel Day-Lewis. Word comes today, via Daily Variety, that the elusive actor, whose last film work was four years ago in "The Boxer," has joined the cast of Scorsese's forthcoming "Gangs of New York," which stars Leonardo Dicaprio. Day-Lewis will play the villain, Bill the Butcher, who tries to thwart gangster Leo's effort to unite the scrappy street gangs in late 19th-century Gotham.
Day-Lewis, of course, won an Oscar for "My Left Foot," and he was in Scorsese's "The Age of Innocence." But no one seems to know for sure what he's been doing for the past few years, or exactly how Scorsese lured him back into the fold.
Maybe it was the free trip to Rome, where "Gangs of New York" begins filming in August.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 12, 2000 -- Hollywood found lots of life on "Mars" this weekend as Buena Vista/Touchstone's "Mission to Mars" blasted off to about $23 million. "Mars" landed in 3,054 theaters with an out-of-this-world estimated $23.10 million ($7,559 per theater).
Its per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release this weekend.
It was a victory as well for studio tracking studies, which had predicted a first-place finish in the mid $20 millions. For the previous three weeks, however, Hollywood pollsters had been overly optimistic about the openings of "Hanging Up," "Reindeer Games" and "The Next Best Thing."
"Our marketing guys (under Marketing President Geoffrey Ammer) did such a fabulous job getting it open," Buena Vista Distribution President Chuck Viane said Sunday morning. "We were sitting here talking this morning, sayi

Moviegoers will "Cast" most of their box office votes for Tom Hanks this weekend.
"Cast Away," 20th Century Fox's PG-13-rated drama reteaming Hanks and "Forrest Gump" director Robert Zemeckis, opens at nearly 2,800 theaters.
"Sunday is going to be off because its Christmas Eve, but with Christmas on a Monday this year it's going to be a four-day weekend," an insider explains. "Based on what 'What Women Want' did last week (opening to $33.6 million), 'Cast Away' could open to $30 million-plus for four days. They'll be number one."
"A lot of business is going to happen over the four days," predicts another studio source. "I assume 'Cast Away' is going to be number one. I think it's going to do around $35 million."
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, "Cast Away" stars Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt.
Second place could see competition between Paramount's PG-13-rate

Its cume is approximately $195.5 million, heading for $250 million-plus.
"It's exhilarating to have 'Grinch' the Number One film four weekends in a row; and as we move closer to the actual holiday season, having this film achieve the $200 million mark prior to that is most gratifying for Universal and Imagine Entertainment," Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said Sunday morning.
"It will hit $200 million by the end of this week or with Friday's business. I can no longer say 'depend

Johnny Depp, to British newspaper The Independent while promoting Blow, on how fatherhood gave his life meaning:
"I went through 35 years of a strange dark fog. I never really quite understood what the point of anything was, you know, in life. It wasn't until Vanessa [Paradis] and then the birth of our daughter that I finally realized that there is something to live for. I didn't have the greatest childhood, but you know, so what, plenty of people have been through more difficult and devastating things and you just have to get through that. That whole thing of wanting to do drugs and wanting to numb yourself, you know, it's just postponing the inevitable."

Moviegoers celebrated "Mummy's" Day this weekend with a record setting $70 million opening.
Universal's PG-13 rated adventure sequel "The Mummy Returns" kicked off Hollywood's pre-summer season with a staggering ESTIMATED $70.11 million at 3,104 theaters ($20,615 per theater). "Mummy" accounted for about 65% of the weekend's total key films gross of $107.5 million.
"Mummy" is well on its way to what looks like it could be a $200 million gross in domestic theaters. That would be about $45 million more than the first "Mummy" did domestically in 1999.
